OK so I haven't been blogging much lately, but not because I have fallen apart. Instead, Drew and I decided to join Weight Watchers online. What they offer is a point system that helps you monitor your food intake and puts you on a limit. For me, I am allowed 24 points/day to spread out however I want. I'm also allowed 35 additional points called "Weekly Point Allowance" that I can use however I want spread throughout all days. We started on Tuesday night, 9/12. At that time, I weighed 197 naked. What started this was that with clothes on, I weighed 200!! I have never weighed that. What I am really getting out of this is more of a lesson in how to be more aware of my food intake quantities and how bad some things are compared to others.
So I began 9/12 at 197. My weigh in dates are each Saturday, but since the first Saturday was less than a week out, I wasn't allowed to weigh in that date. The next weigh in was 9/23, at which I was 188. So in 1 1/2 weeks, I lost 9 pounds. 4 days later and now I am at 186. This is a good sign. So 11 pounds lighter, I begin to feel my clothes loosen up and that motivates me more. Since I track everything I eat, anytime I feel as though I may go over in points, I force myself to exercise. I do exercise anyway, but on that specific day it is mandatory. Even if that only means running for 30 mins. Another benefit of this is that I am now eating more vegetables. Ugh. I still don't like them, but hey, I should probably try and prevent cancer anyway I can.
I am still swimming and my two current goals are doing well. The first one was to focus on more backstorke this season. I am doing that, and it is beginning to show as my times are getting faster and faster in the water. The real test will be this December at our meet. The other goal was to do the 200 fly. And that will happen THIS SUNDAY! Ugh. I have only done 1 200 fly in the past 16 years, and that was last year. And boy, that was NOT pretty. I am tossing around the idea of wearing my fastskin suit for this event to get a good time in for the year and to help me stay afloat. That last 50 is going to be scary!!! Help!!

Sunday, September 10th - Double Workout!
So today has started off well. Early morning swim workout along with a spin class.
Swim -
500 w/u
4 X 50s drill/swim = 200 yards
4 X 125s, build within each 125 = 500 yards
4 X 50s drill/swim = 200 yards
4 X 75s descend 1 -4 = 300 yards
4 X 50s drill/swim = 200 yards
4 X 25s sprint = 100 yards
10 X 50s pull, reduce breaths 5 to 1, then repeat for 10 50s = 500 yards
25, 50, 75, 100 X 3, stroke or IM = 750 yards
300 cool down = 300 yards
Total = 3,550 yards
The workout was really good, but I feel as though I am in a slump, performance-wise. What I mean by that is that I feel as though I should be faster. Maybe its due to me spinning, running and lifting weights. I feel as though I am just making up an easy excuse. The good thing is that we have a good bunch of guys all on the same level. All of us seem to have a good workout here and there. So basically I have to be "on" and want it more if I want to be ahead of everyone. I think this is great since it pushes everyone to work harder. One day I can be on, another day someone else. Ugh!! That just makes me want to work harder, but then the PAIN!!! LOL.
So for today's workout, like yesterday, I felt a little bit off. I really need to work on my turns. The breathing set was fun and a good challenge. I think that will help with my turns in knowing I don't have to pop right up. For the final set, I did round #1 and 2 backstroke. My 100s were around 1:10, which is ok. I think it was about 90%. Round #3, I was psycho and did butterfly. Its what I needed to do!! :-) I was SO not into it, but doing 250 yards of fly was good for me. My 100 was about a 1:09 but just hurt. Makes me want to do more so it won't hurt as much.
SPINNING -
1 hour of swimming. Sweat is good.
The rest of the day is mowing the lawn, walking the dogs, food shopping and cleaning the house. The swim team fundraiser will be tonight, but we will only go for about 90 mins and then head back home as we are having friends over for dinner. I will be as good as I can :-).

Saturday, September 9th Swim & Gym
Started off good. Swim workout was tough, I wasn't feeling tip top, but I gave it almost my all.
500 w/u - 500 yards
6 X 50s on 0:50, descend 1-3,4-6 = 300 yards
2 X 100 KRLS, 1st one free, 2nd one stroke = 200 yards
10 X 100s, odds IM, evens Free, ascend IMs, descend Free = 1000 yards
50 easy
50 10/10, 50 build, 125 strong, 4 Xs = 900 yards
6 X 25s, underwater, followed by 1 min of kick on the wall equivalent to = 600 yards
450 cool down
Total = 4000 yards
Good workout. IM's took some time to warm up, felt off, but I still kept it going. Free's got a little better. Went 1:20, 1:14, 1:08, 1:03, 0:58. Felt tired but did them hard. The 6 X25 underwater followed by kicking was fun and TOUGH. I chose to do the 25s backstroke underwater using dolphin kicking to help me get in the rhythm of doing that off of each wall for backstroke. Did a long cool down just to reach 4000 yards.
We will go to the gym tonight.
Gym was good. We did about 6 exercises then finished with about 200-250 sit-ups (different types). Dinner was at Pizza Place and I tortelli. So bad for me, but so good. Ugh. The food part of this challenge is going to be difficult.

Friday September 8th
Morning weight - 194. Lost two pounds, but I'm not taking that too serious until my weekly weigh in.
No workouts today (Friday) as I have to head to the doctor soon. My hip is black and blue and has been hurting quite frequently lately. The pain and color is right where a cyst tumor was located back in 1981 when I was 7 and in the center where I have a 1 1/2 foot long scar. I'm hoping its just nothing, but of course part of me fears something worse. After the doctors, I have a bbq to go to, so I need to try and not each too much and be good. I want to run on Saturday then swim, and on Sunday I want to swim and then spin.

Thursday September 7th
Since Wednesday didn't produce much exercise I was bound to make sure today would. Drew got up early to go the gym, but I'm just not feeling the morning workouts yet. Also, since I was subbing for him tonight at 7:00 for coaching, I knew I had to get into work somewhat early so I could leave by 4pm to get a good workout in.
I was in the water by 4:15pm.
200, 2X100s, 4X50 swim
200, 2X100s, 4X50s pull
200, 2X100s, 4X50s back
14 X 25s fly
50 cool down
Total - 2000 yards.
Swim felt fine. Trying to keep the focus on rotating my core for backstroke. Also, since I am doing a 200 fly on Oct 1st, my focus is to throw some fly into each workout too. Now off to the gym.
5:30-6:30 - Spinning
Great spin class. Dara wasn't there so there was a sub. The guy was funny and it was a change that made me laugh and forget about the pain. Then I would be reminded and it felt good. I was sweating like a mad man.
Left the gym feeling great!
Dinner were these chicken tenders in honey mustard sauce, rice and a salad. Drew made peach cobbler. Yummy but BAD Brian. I need to do doubles this weekend to burn that off!!

Wednesday, September 6th
So far no exercise. For breakfast I had a banana and a green machine drink. I was going to also have a yogurt but it looked funny. For lunch I'm currently eating a chicken breast, grapes and some cottage cheese. I will follow it up with a peach. I brought and orange and more grapes for snacking.
Normally I don't exercise on Wednesdays, but if I get home early enough, I am going to run with the puppies. Stay tuned.
So no running. Instead I was sore and took the dogs for a long walk as I got money from the ATM. They really enjoyed it. After that, I meant Drew and Ally for mexican food. I had 1 1/2 margaritas and 3 tacos and a few nachos. Probably not the best move, but oh well. I will do a double workout tomorrow to make up for it.

September 5th, 2006 - REBIRTH.... It is time again
So here I am again. It seems like the only time I come here is when there is some new goal in my life and I enjoy writing everything down on it as it goes on and on. But this time around, the chosen journey isn't like the prior ones. First it was IGLA 2004, then IGLA 2005, then the LA Marathon and Gay Games. But since the marathon my body's appearance and turned quite unappealing to me. I've gained some weight and that is one of the main things that has always bothered me.
So this rounds BlogFest will be a combination of all previous blogs with a new twist. My ending goal is pretty simple. I want to look at my body in the mirror and feel proud of what I have made it but also, I want to feel great INSIDE as well, knowing that I am taking care of my body for the future of my life. Along the way, there will be other swimming events and running events that will be importang goals as well. My journal might turn a bit personal and boring as I will talk about my weaknesses for food and the issues I have with not being able to stop eating even when I am done along eating poorly. I will write down my meals as good as I can. I will also discuss my workouts and have twice a week official weigh ins.
The reason I have started today (went to gym yesterday too) was that with clothes on, for the first time in my life I weighed 200 pounds. Of course naked I was 196, but that is still heavier than EVER. Since March I have put on over 10 pounds. My clothes are tight and that isn't flattering!!! I am swimming just as fast, but that makes me wonder if the loss of weight and any effect. Either way, let the games begin:
Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 =
Weigh in - 196
Running - Ran 2 miles. It felt nice to get back out there running. I would like to run with the dogs, but sometimes I like to leave everything behind and just shut out the world. I think my next run with be with the dogs and I will alternate back and forth. This way, the puppies will get some run time with me, but I will also not rob myself of my personal pleasure of running alone. My time wasn't anything special for the 2 miles and right now that isn't a concern. Off to swim practice!
Swimming -
500 warm up
4 X 50s kick, 4 X 100s pull, 4 X 50s kick = 800 yards
100 free, 4 X 25s fly, 2 X 50s fly, 1 X 100 fly, then repeat for back/breast/free = 1600 yards
Relays - 200 yards
Total workout - 3100 yards
Swimming felt good. Main focus was on the 100s of each stroke. I swam them all controlled. 1:09 fly, 1:10 back, 1:17 breast, 1:01 free. 4:37 400 IM. That would be an ideal 400 IM in season swim. The best in season so far in 4:56 or something like that. For the next month I am focusing on my fly and back. I have a meet on October 1st which will be SCM (short course meters) and I have a goal for the 200 back and 200 fly. 200 back is to go 2:25 or better. That would put me within 2 seconds of my Gay Games time. For the 200 fly, I would be incredibly happy with being under 2:30. Hips baby. I may wear my fastskin jammer for the 200 fly just to help with my hips.
Good first day.
